Lews Castle
Situated, majestically above Stornoway harbour Lews Castle is a stunning example of mid 19th century architecture built between 1847 and 1857 by the affluent Sir James Matheson of the Jardine Matheson company. After acquiring the island of Lewis in 1844 he transformed the landscape and constructed this remarkable mock Tudor castle. In 1918 the castle was purchased by Lord Leverhulme who generously returned it to the people of Lewis in 1923.
Throughout its history Lews Castle has served various purposes including a hospital during the Second World War and later as an educational institution before it fell into disrepair. The castle grounds boast a unique woodland area filled with diverse trees a rarity on the island due to its challenging climate. Today visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the well kept paths and roads that wind through this beautiful setting.
The Castle has recently been refurbished and now has a cafe and hotel, along with a museum.
