The fourth of the Society’s winter series of lectures will be held on Tuesday 27th February 2018 at 7.00 pm in the Council Chambers, Sandwick Rd. Our guest speaker will be Catherine Maclean talking about India, following “In the Footsteps of Colin Mackenzie”. Colonel Colin Mackenzie (c1753-1821), the Stornoway born, surveyor and military engineer gathered together one of the most, if not the most, diverse and unique collections of Indian culture of which a small fragment was displayed at Museum nan Eilean in 2017.

Catherine Maclean is the Special Projects Curator for the An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway and was the prime mover in organising both the Collector Extraordinaire exhibition referred to above and the Purvai festival of Indian culture which were both held in Stornoway last year. Her travels in India to find out more about Mackenzie’s life and career led to a deeping love affair with that country and this talk will reflect much of what she discovered.
